Pennsylvania physicians are now able to take the first steps towards participating in the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program, by completing the Practitioner Registry.

This is another step closer to a full rollout of the program which was signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf on April 17, 2016:

“Since April 2016, we’ve been working to implement a patient-focused Medical Marijuana Program for Pennsylvanians in desperate need of medication,” says Dr. Rachel Levine, Physician General and Acting Secretary of Health. “Many physicians treat these patients every day and understand the impact this medication could have on their treatment. Once these physicians register and complete the required continuing education, they can be approved to participate in the program.”

Since The Medical Marijuana Program was signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf, the state has made strides in implementation:

  • Completed the Safe Harbor temporary guidelines and Safe Harbor Letter application process, as well as approved 282 applications;
  • Completed temporary regulations for: growers/processors; dispensaries; practitioners; and laboratories, which have all appeared in the Pennsylvania Bulletin;
  • Released applications for medical training providers and laboratories;
  • Issued permits to 27 entities for dispensaries and 12 entities for grower/processors;
  • Developed the Medical Marijuana Physician Workgroup; and
  • Awarded a contract to MJ Freeway for electronic tracking of medical marijuana.

The Medical Marijuana Program serves patients who are residents of Pennsylvania and under a physician’s care for the treatment of a serious medical condition as defined by Act 16. It became effective May 17, 2016, with the intention of having it fully effectuated by 2018.

Pennsylvania residents that qualify are legally able to obtain medical cannabis, but only in non-smokeable forms.

The Department of Health Website now has the option for prospective patients and caregivers to register for the program and see a list of approved doctors that can certify patients to use cannabis.

12 Growers, Growing

Cresco Yeltrah, a licensed cannabis grower and processor in Northwestern Pennsylvania, became the first to get one of the few coveted medical marijuana growing permits in PA, authorizing them to set up shop at a former graphite factory in Brookville, PA. They will be opening dispensaries in Butler, Pittsburgh’s strip district, and a third site yet to be determined.

Cresco Yeltrah plans to grow over 30 different strain varieties at this 40,000 square foot facility. They will also produce numerous medicinal products such as vapor oils, pills, patches, and more. They expect sales to be fully operational by sometime in February.

Pennsylvania’s Department of Health has issued an additional 11 grower/processor permits. A complete list can be found below.

27 Medical Marijuana Dispensary Permits

Pennsylvania’s Department of Health has issued 27 medical marijuana dispensary licenses. The winners have only a few months to become fully operational before medical cannabis sales are expected to begin.

“This has been a highly competitive process and the department received hundreds of quality applications,” John Collins, director of the state’s Office of Medical Marijuana, said in a statement. “Once this program is fully operational, patients with serious medical conditions will have locations throughout the commonwealth where they can purchase medication to help in their treatment. We remain on track to provide medication to patients in 2018.”
