The DEA is in the “final stages” of deciding if it will reschedule marijuana, according to The Cannabist. That said, according to Westword, the decision may not come in 2016.
DEA Spokesman Russ Baer said the agency can’t give a timeframe for when the decision will come. “We’re closer than we were a month ago,” he said. “It’s a very deliberate process.”
The DEA had originally said the decision would come in the first half of 2016, but that never happened. “DEA understands the widespread interest in the prompt resolution to these petitions and hopes to release its determination in the first half of 2016,” the agency wrote in April.
The DEA decided to consider rescheduling marijuana when Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and seven other Democratic senators urged the DEA to do what it can to help spur marijuana research. As we reported in July, there was an article that said the decision would come by August 1, but it was never confirmed.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has promised to reschedule cannabis if she is elected, and Republican candidate Donald Trump has only said he would let states legalize marijuana if they decide to.
