A stellar group of doctors and public health experts, including psychiatrists, professors, and researchers, announced the formation of Doctors for Cannabis Regulation today.
Their goal is no less than legalizing and regulating marijuana for adult use, and their Board of Directors includes people who are quite familiar to the cannabis community, such as Dr. Sunil Aggarwal, Darby Beck, Dr. Malik Burnett, Dr. Julie Holland, and Dr. Suzanne Sisley.
Members of DFCR’s Honorary Board comprise even more illustrious names, including Dr. Andrew Weil (pioneer of integrative medicine), Dr. Lester Grinspoon (pretty much the top cannabis doctor in the world), Dr. Carl Hart, Dr. Donald Abrams, and even Dr. Joycelyn Elders, the former Surgeon General of the United States.
Dr. David Nathan is the president of the group, and on a conference call, he discussed how prohibition has been like “using a sledgehammer to kill a weed” and how he’s seen too many people hurt more by the law than by the substance itself. Dr. Nathan pointed out that the “gateway theory” has never established causation, and was calling “upon physicians to listen to the science” instead of the antidrug rhetoric.
The 420 Times asked whether the group would be supporting the many pro-cannabis doctors who have been targeted and threatened with losing their medical licenses by state medical boards. Unfortunately, the DCR’s initial response was to say that this is not part of their prime focus. This is quite ironic, considering the fact that even suggesting the exploration of the possibility of legalizing drugs helped lead to Dr. Elders getting publicly humiliated and fired by the Clinton administration. Even the American Medical Association — which is generally against medical marijuana — has asked Congress to protect doctors who recommend cannabis.
