A major new study, which is 395 pages long, dives into the health benefits of consuming marijuana.

“The growing acceptance, accessibility, and use of cannabis raise important public health concerns and there is a clear need to establish what is known and what needs to be known about the health effects of cannabis use,” the study says.

The study comes from the nonprofit National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. It claims compounds in cannabis can be useful for treating chronic pain, nausea, inflammation and more. As for risks associated with consuming cannabis, the scientists found cannabis can trigger a heart attack in someone who has heart disease, it could increase the risk of someone getting bronchitis (depending on how you consume it) and that it’s dangerous to drive when you’re high (although other studies have noted it’s safer than drunk driving).

They also found women who smoke marijuana while pregnant may birth children who have lower birth weights. The study was not able to confirm or deny claims that marijuana can treat things like epilepsy or cancer.

It’s important to note this study simply analyzed around 10,000 other reports. They did not do original clinical research.

The more you read the report, the more you’re able to see that these scientists had trouble finding anything concrete they could say about marijuana’s benefits or risks. There’s a lot of talk about things that might be caused by smoking marijuana and things that might be benefits, but it’s all very ambiguous. It seems that even though this report is incredibly long and detailed, we still need further cannabis research.
