A lot of people are wondering when Nevada’s recreational marijuana law that passed in November will take effect.

The short answer is: January 1, 2017. On that date, anyone over the age of 21 will be able to smoke weed on their own property, grow up to six plants, and possess up to an ounce at any time.

That doesn’t mean recreational marijuana shops will be popping up all over the place in January. As it has happened with other states that have legalized recreational marijuana, it takes time for the state government to set up the licensing process, growing, testing and more. So it will likely be another year before recreational sales begin.

In the mean time, Nevada residents will have to grow their own marijuana or become medical marijuana patients.
