Hawaii’s First Medical Marijuana Shop Sold out in Less Than a Week

Hawaii’s first medical marijuana shop, a place called Maui Grown Therapies, sold out of marijuana within a week of opening on Tuesday.

If that sounds familiar, it’s probably because Nevada sold out of recreational marijuana within two weeks of sales beginning. California officials have even worried about if the state is going to have enough marijuana when recreational sales start in 2018. Americans really love weed.

The state only allows the dispensary to sell buds, and it was expecting the state to approve the sale of a new batch of buds it had grown by Saturday, but that didn’t happen.

“It’s unfortunate that an administrative hindrance of this magnitude prevents patients from getting the help they need,” said Christopher Cole, director of product management for Maui Grown Therapies. “We had planned to open with a full range of derivative products such as concentrates, oils, capsules and topical products, but at the eleventh hour we discovered that the State Labs Division had failed to certify a lab to conduct testing of manufactured products.”

One of the biggest issues with state’s legalizing medical marijuana and recreational marijuana is making the process of getting bud to consumers efficient. It seems clear Hawaii isn’t doing that very well yet. Because it ran out of product, the store had to close today and tomorrow, and it’s hoping to reopen by Wednesday.

Hawaii’s labs have had delays, so that’s why the bud wasn’t approved quickly enough. It’s a minor setback, but it’s indicative of the struggles shops like this face when a state is still figuring out how to handle newly legalized marijuana. Since states are all legalizing individually, the process of getting bud to consumers is significantly different from one state to the next, which is why many argue marijuana should be legalized nationwide so that things can be a bit more uniform. It seems unlikely that’s going to happen under this administration, but it does seem like it’d be helpful.
