According to a new Pew Research Center survey, the majority of police officers support less strict marijuana laws.
Of the 8,000 officers who participated, 68 percent said marijuana laws should be relaxed. In comparison, a whopping 84 percent of the public supports less strict marijuana laws.
The survey also found marijuana has more support among younger officers, compared to older ones. Around 37 percent of officers under the age of 35 supported legalizing recreational marijuana, while 27 percent of those between the ages of 50 and 60 supported legalizing.
As the Washington Post noted, police groups have often been at the forefront of battling marijuana legalization, and it’s often said that’s because police departments stand to lose War on Drugs funding when marijuana is legalized.
So there it is. There are some cool cops out there, and their numbers seem to be growing, at least when it comes to marijuana.
