A lot of people are upset about how Attorney General Jeff Sessions is handling drug policy, but a former NFL player is actually doing something about it: He’s suing.
Marvin Washington was a defensive lineman who played for the New York Jets for most of his career. He retired in 1999. Marvin and four other plaintiffs are suing Sessions, the Department of Justice and the DEA over marijuana legalization. Washington runs a company that sells hemp-based products that are meant to be targeted at athletes. He claims marijuana being illegal blocks him from getting federal grants for his business.
Washington is one of many current and former NFL players who think marijuana use is good for NFL players. They claim it can help for chronic pain and many other issues players face.
NFL Legend Reggie Williams claimed earlier this year he’s only able to walk because of marijuana. Recently retired NFL player Eugene Monroe is also a major marijuana supporter.
“Classifying cannabis as a ‘Schedule I drug’ is so irrational that it violates the U.S. Constitution,” the lawsuit says.
“One of my goals is to get cannabis accepted by the athletic community,” Washington said in March. “The NFL has a safety issue and it needs to look at this plant. The NFL needs to follow the science. I don’t want to kill football, I want to make it safer — with marijuana.”
Though Sessions has been receiving heat from his old friend Donald Trump recently, where Trump is basically just projecting his own failures on Sessions, it doesn’t appear Sessions is going to resign any time soon. It seems extremely unlikely Sessions would decide he suddenly supports marijuana legalization, so he’s going to have to deal with this lawsuit sooner or later.
Considering the amount of brain damage and other health issues NFL players end up facing, you’d think it’d be okay for them to have a plant that helps them. Unfortunately for them, people like Jeff Sessions have been brainwashed and won’t let them.
